Weaving History in Palestine
Palestinian Embroidery, Ancient Future Technologies and a Tapestry of History.
Weaving is a research theme that we’ve explored over the last 10 years. Looking to threads that unite and differentiate between us. How stitching can preserve the cultural fabric of a place, alongside language, identity, community, spirituality, storytelling and a circulation of wealth. Weaving, it turns out, is so much more than clothing we wear, or fabrics we use in everyday life.
Today, we want to honor the weaving traditions in Palestine, that hold the depth of culture and history within its process and design.
We are also looking to examples of Ancient Future Technologies, for how traditions weaving designs are being preserved online, inviting on-going innovation.
Furthermore, we are celebrating the Palestinian History Tapestry. Concepted in 2012, with the aim to illustrate the long history of Palestine from Neolithic times, several thousand years ago to present day.
During times of war, genocide, and attacks on peoples way of life, it’s easy to make people just statistics and reduce them to victims of violence, without representing the depth and beauty that exists also. These cultural aspects can humanize and connect us, reminding us what is worth protecting, reminding us of the dignity and richness of a people.
